What attracted us to Anguilla in the British Overseas Territories in the Caribbean, other than its obvious crystal blue waters and friendly people, was a couple of quite specific attractions.
The culture of Caribbean music (the island has produced a number of famous reggae, Calypso, Soca and country musicians) was a definite pull, together with the cool little beach shacks and bars which we had researched prior to our arrival so that we can witness the remarkable talent of musician Bankie Banx. With a laid-back and totally understated atmosphere, it was obvious that you didn't need more other than a broad full smile to fit into the lifestyle in Anguilla. Great food and music, it was relaxing and inspiring all at once.
The other attraction, as a lover of original hotels that have managed to keep their charm from years gone by, was the Malliouhana. A delight for anyone who loves colour and interiors, whose walls, scattered with gorgeous naive joyful paintings, told stories of years gone by.

Art had a powerful way of telling a story and bringing a sense of history to a space, something I’ve tried to carry on in my own work over the years.
